Angelina Eberly—innkeeper, patriot, and accidental cannon-wielder

Ask 10 Austinites, “What’s the deal with the woman lighting off a cannon on Congress Ave?” and you’d be lucky if two knew the real story. That woman? Angelina Eberly—innkeeper, patriot, and accidental cannon-wielder—who once saved Austin from losing its title as capital of Texas.

In 1842, President Sam Houston tried to secretly move the Republic of Texas archives from Austin to Houston under cover of darkness. But Angelina caught wind of the plan. Rather than sit quietly, she rolled a cannon into the street and fired it, waking the town and alerting residents to the attempted theft. Her shot kicked off what became known as the Archive War—no bloodshed, just bold action—and helped ensure Austin remained the capital.
