Step Inside the Haunted Speakeasy: Austin’s Only Ghost Tour That Takes You Beyond the Sidewalk

a store front at night

When it comes to ghost tours, nothing compares to actually being inside the haunted spaces where chilling stories unfolded. That’s exactly what makes Walking Tours of Austin the tour company to choose in Austin! With exclusive access to The Speakeasy Tavern, Ghost Walk Austin is a one-of-a-kind experience.

Step beyond the sidewalk and into the heart of a historic building teeming with eerie energy and unexplained encounters. This isn’t just a walk-by—we take you deep inside the Speakeasy’s shadowy past with an extended tour through backrooms rarely seen by the public, including the beautiful front bar with its exposed brick, gorgeous windows, and the occasional chilling screams of the Speakeasy’s first victim, Jimmy Glass.

You’ll hear the tragic tale of firefighter Jimmy Glass, who perished on the very spot you’ll be standing—nearly a century ago. To this day, staff, locals, and even tour participants have reported hearing his desperate screams echoing through the walls.

Then there’s the unsettling account of Misty, a former employee who, although the only person in the Speakeasy at the time, was inexplicably locked inside the maintenance room—from the outside. She screamed until someone finally heard her pounding and let her out. When the security footage was reviewed, no other “human” was seen. The door closing and latching on its own remains a mystery to this day.

And what about the mysterious message left behind in the building’s most notorious space, known by staff as “the scary room”? The message was discovered by the Speakeasy’s head of security, Bartholemew. While renovating the room, he pulled back old boards on a back wall and uncovered a hidden space never before seen by current management. To his shock and horror, he found a personal message written in a thick layer of dust on a shelf—someone, or something, had scrawled a greeting using his nickname: “Hi Barry.” No one has ever confessed. No one knows why. But you’ll get to see the exact spot for yourself.

If you’re ready to go beyond the usual ghost stories and actually step into the supernatural, Tour ATX at The Speakeasy is waiting.
